Is the far north safe in Nordic hands?
13:30-14:30, Scottish Parliament, Festival of Politics, 26th Aug
The Arctic holds a big proportion of the world's fish stocks & massive supplies of oil and gas. Barents Secretariat boss Rune Rafaelsen says Norway can exploit reserves and develop human resources in the High North without environmental damage. Anna Kireeva of Nordic eco-group Bellona will question him chaired by myself Lesley Riddoch – co-director of Nordic Horizons. This should be a great event for anyone interested in the incredible environment of Finnmark – Norway's northernmost county – which has better bridges, roads, airports and infrastructure than most of remote, rural Scotland. Norway's safety record in extracting sub-sea Arctic gas reserves to date has been excellent. But can that continue?Should a "green" nation that exports all its gas and uses clean hydro be encouraging other nations to maintain their dependency on the world's last fossil fuel reserves and what about the massive largely Russian Shtokman field? Tickets must be booked but they are free and available from today on www.festivalofpolitics.org.uk/day6.htm
