Today's Scotsman column is about the future of Princes Street, which may be not much of a future for pedestrians and cyclists.
Up till recently images on tram websites and the demo tram beside Jenners have shown trams at the kerb with no buses in sight (left below).
In fact trams will be boarded from a central reservation (below centre) flanked by bus lanes. I've no objection to trams in the middle of the street – that's how the old ones ran too. (below right)
But if buses are beside them – running almost as many services after trams as before – it will get busy, especially for cyclists worrying about getting tyres stuck in the tram grooves should they overtake stationary buses.
